As I have a lot of characters, I tend to PuG a lot. On average I would say I do perhaps two PuG runs a day, most of the time heroics, depending a bit on what the daily heroic is.
What I keep noticing is that in almost every run I do, there is one of the so-called DPS-ers who will do less damage than the tank. So I keep wondering, why do people sign up for heroics as DPS if they cannot even keep up with the tank damage wise?
Some days ago, I ran with a rogue. He did about half the damage of our tank, and upon closer inspection, he was wearing green levelling gear. In other words, he had not even taken the time to do normal level 70 instances to get a bit of gear before throwing himself onto the heroic bandwagon. Another time I was in a run where TWO of the DPS-ers did less damage than the tank. Needless to say, that was a tremendously long and painful run for the three others.
I have had people in epic gear underperform to the extent where just plain wanding from a caster would do more dps. My theory is that this might be the same people you would see instantly teleport to the base in Alterac Valley to "defend". Perhaps it is just too easy to get epics, and perhaps people think that epic gear equals skill. That is a discussion for another day though. The main issue, in my opinion, is that it is a lot easier to get keyed for heroics.
I can definitely see how lowering the heroic key reputation level to honored can be a good thing. When I levelled my warrior, I had all heroic keys and the Karazhan key about eight hours after dinging, and it was nice not having to worry about getting keyed. But being keyed didn't mean I was ready. I spent quite a bit of time running normal instances to gather gear and get my stats up to a decent point before even trying a heroic or Karazhan.
The lowered reputation level puts a higher responsibility on the players. Since it is so easy to get keyed, it is up to the players themselves to judge when they feel they are ready for a heroic. In my opinion, too many people either don't even think about whether they are ready or not, or choose the egoistical route of "I don't care that I am undergeared and that I cannot do my job in the instance, I will let the others work and just get free badges".
No, this is not a rant to say that it is not possible to have an undergeared player in a heroic. Of course it is possible. It is just not fair to have the decently geared people pull all the weight, when I am sure all they wanted was a smooth and fast run. And the least to expect from someone who joins a group as DPS, is that they can do just that. So to those who cannot keep up with the tank in a heroic - more DPS, please, or come back when can do your job. |
