| World of Nihilum | by Phixus @ 20 Mar 2008, 06:37 PM |
| Hi everyone, Welcome to the first entry of the newly created Nihilum Blog. The idea behind this blog is basically to show off and to create some international arena discussions. I (Phixus) will mostly post about 5v5, but Cherez (Cherekee) and others will try to post stuff about 3v3 and other random things. The goal is to have a monthly blog where we include a 5v5 or 3v3 movie/clip and discuss it. We'll talk about arena trends, setups, tournaments and other major events with the emphasis on Europe and how we Europeans perceive the US arena scene. On Monday the 17th my team, Nihilum Arena, won the second Cyclone 5v5 tournament and the movie from this Grand Final has been released today. This is of course the perfect moment to start a new blog. You can find the movie here: CLICK HERE The movie will be on WCM so you should be able to find it there as well a bit later today or tomorrow. Alright moving on; As you can see in the movie our 5v5 setup is: Warrior, Paladin, Priest, Hunter, Elemental Shaman and right now we're also the only top30~ team that's seriously playing this setup on Cyclone. So why do we play this setup? The answer is quite simple but I'll tell a little story first. At the start of season3 we were playing 2346 quite successfully, back then there were no "euro comp" teams or other "zerg the lock" teams so it felt to us that our setup was really the strongest around. Soon after that Knockout came to our BG and totally obliterated everyone with their hunter/lock setup which was completely new for our BG. We had some very long nights fighting Knockout and learning how to beat their setup which in the end paid off since we were the first team to play 50-50 against them. Overall it took about a month before most teams started to figure out how to fight their setup at which point they had a harder time keeping their rating. Around the same time my team got sponsored and we got Cherekee the hunter into our team. I guess you can already smell what I'm going to say next; yes, we switched to hunter/lock because we wanted a piece of the Knockout pie. Suffice to say we did very well with this setup but I think I speak for everyone in the team when I say that we never really enjoyed the setup. We were always talking about the good old 2346 times and how much more that setup matched our playstyle. Then came the "Euro Comp". Rogue, Mage, Priest, Warlock, Druid. People zerged warlocks before but never like this. Training 1 guy 100% of the game while spamming CC on the other 4 guys was a new thing. At first we were skeptical, a bit like Inactive from CLC, and figured we would just have to l2p against this setup (like with the Knockout setup) since "5v5 doesn't have the 3v3 counter comping gayness". Clearly we were wrong and were slowly starting to realize this as more and more RMPDW teams appeared and managed to beat us. Players that we would previously deem as "crap" were now stealing our rating. Now partially this was still because we had no effective tactic against RMPDW's, but even after several weeks we found ourself losing to "lesser" RMPDW's every now and then (RNG anyone?). When the first Cyclone 5v5 tournament (and Slot our shaman still wasn't back from his internship QQ) we signed up as hunter/lock team even though we knew we didn't really stand a chance against the good RMPDW teams. So when we had to fight our first RMPDW we had a choice: Either lose, or try some other (new) setup that would maybe lead us to victory. At first we tried Warrior, Druid, Priest, Hunter, Lock but after some horrible rated games we realized this wasn't going to work. So we tried Warrior, Paladin, Priest, Hunter, Resto Druid and guess what, it worked. We played the tri healer setup against Zom's Showtime and pretty much facerolled our way to victory. This lead to one of the first major Cyclone dramas since a lot of people weren't very happy with our "counter comping tactics". So the next game against RMPDW we weren't allowed to use our druid and (as expected) we got 3-0'ed by Avada Kedavra who eventually won the first Cyclone tourny. When our shaman came back we all pretty much instantly knew what was going to happen: drop the warlock. Even though our warlock Dreadlol is really amazing and I love playing with him it was just to frustrating to watch him get trained every single game. So Hunter/Shaman it was and we've been loving it ever since. To me Hunter/Shaman feels like one of the last "true 5v5 setups". It has no direct counter, you can lose to any of the popular setups and you can beat any setup (so far). It really depends on how good you play which is what games should be about, playing good. At the same time the setup really fit our play style extremely well. High dps, Fast and ALOT of switches, aggresive gameplay but without the real zerging. If you try to really zerg 1 target with hunter/shaman you're going to get your ass handed to you. No CoT means you have to (against 2346 for example) control the priest and the shaman and if you want to kill something you'll have to control the paladin as well. It's difficult to manage especially when they do have CoT available, but far from impossible. First few weeks we pretty much raped everyone with the new setup but (as it should) it get's harder each day to beat the good teams as they're figuring out our weakpoints and effectively exploiting these. So what's next? Till a few days ago I was expecting some triple melee team to appear on Cyclone and totally obliterate all the 2346 and RMPDW teams (which is 80% of our top20) but (unfortunately) there's no decent triple melee team on Cyclone yet. I'd like to encourage people to try it out though, I'm certain that if your gear is good you'll be able to get top10 in no time even with very poor teamwork (okay maybe I shouldn't be encouraging this). Besides triple melee there's another variation to the "Euro comp" that's going to cause some havoc soon. Rogue, Mage, Priest, HUNTER, Druid. It's so logical and so obvious and it seems to be a popular trend. Are you having problems with your warlock getting trained? DONT WORRY and just replace him with a hunter! There's not many teams with this setup yet (none on Cyclone) but on a few BG's this setup is already gaining popularity. Here's one example: eu.wowarmory.com/team-info.xml?r=Blackmoore&ts=5&am p;t=Der+Team Their stats might not be the best, but according to some people I've spoken from that BG the only reason they lose is because their priest is braindead. I expect that if some really proper players try this setup it'll be almost unstoppable. I'm not sure, but I think this setup is going to be pretty popular soon and I'm curious how it's going to work out. Before I finish I just want to share something small about the Grand Final movie. The rogue Shader is Deep Combat, he had to use this spec because it wasn't allowed to respec for the tournament games. I'm not sure why he took it in the first place, but if I remember correctly he said on irc that he took it because the increased dps from deep combat would give them a better chance at beat their ultimate counter setup (triple healer). Also WRC hasn't been very active lately, so they were a bit rusty. When they're not rusty however I can say they're easily the best RMPDW team on Cyclone. Alright that's it. I hope everyone enjoyed reading this blog. If you have any suggestions or you'd like us to talk about something specific just post a reply and we'll try to cover it in our next blog. /Phixus Out\ P.S. People from Cyclone! Make sure to check www.nihilum.eu tonight/tomorrow. The Nihilum 3v3 tournament organised by Mousesports is starting soon and signups should be open tonight or tomorrow. |
