| Casual Whineday | by Theik @ 24 Apr 2008, 10:14 PM |
| It has been a while since I have last posted a blog, and I figured it was about time I voiced my opinion once again, just to show that I don't care that you don't care about what I think. If you're not confused yet, you have passed the preliminary intelligence test and you are now ready to carry on to Casual Whineday; or 'Why you should have stuck to playing Tetris'. Casual Whineday - Why you should have stuck to playing Tetris Casuals, you can't really go around them these days. Most World of Warcraft players are casuals, and as such they are the main source of income for Blizzard. The game has been taking turns for a more casual-friendly gameplay nearly every patch; yet still you can't go much more than a day without reading that the game simply isn't casual-friendly enough. Now I've been spending more time reading the Age of Conan forums lately; yet even there you can't seem to go without them; casuals are everywhere; and it's about time I shot some down. So let's continue to one of my favourite pastimes, casual hunting. Shhhh, I'm hunting casuals First, we're going to have to define what exactly a casual is, for they come in many shapes and sizes. I will, in this blog, be going through all of them and explain why exactly these people should have stuck to playing Tetris, instead of joining an MMORPG and whining about it. The One Hour Hero - What - Meet the one hour hero. He or she seems to have some kind of really busy life that only allows for half an hour, maybe a full hour of game time each day. Due to this limitation, they do not have the time required to form a group to go to long instances or do a raid instance. The One Hour Hero will often complain that the game is too time-consuming, and that unless you have no life, you will never be able to do any of the endgame content or reach the maximum level. - Why - One thing that the One Hour Hero always seems to forget is that while they only have a short time a day to play the game; many people do not. Games were designed to be an entertaining way to spent time you weren't doing anything (or were supposed to be studying, in some cases), and as such are already designed to take time to complete. A game you finish in two hours of game-play is far too short and it simply isn't what people are looking for. In MMORPGS, this rings especially true. People pay every month to keep the servers up and to provide funding for new content, and if they beat the entire game in five hours of playtime they would not be happy bunnies. Running out of content in a MMORPG is a killer, for people will stop paying for the game and in the end the servers will go down. Keeping this in mind, a lot of people play more hours a day than the One Hour Hero, and as such, they will be going through content a lot faster. If MMORPGs were tailored for One Hour Heroes, players who want to invest more time into the game will quickly run out of content. Add to that that people want to be rewarded for what they have accomplished and the time they have invested into the game. The One Hour Hero would be a very happy player if he received a full set of Tier Six after a month of playing half an hour each day, but the same won't go for the raiders who wiped in the Black Temple and Sunwell for hours on end trying to nail the encounter just right. In conclusion, the One Hour Hero needs to realise that a game, where people of all kinds play in; people who want to be rewarded based on what they have accomplished; will never be a place where a One Hour Hero will become the main player. If you absolutely must have seen every bit of content in a game, stick to single player games where you can take content at your own pace. Mr. Solo - What - I'm fairly certain everybody has seen a Mr. Solo more than once in their World of Warcraft career. They are the kind of player who for some mind-bogglingly stupid reason have rolled a MMORPG. (Note: MMO stands for Massive Multiplayer Online) with the intention of going through the entire game without ever teaming with another player. They'll be standing in Orgrimmar complaining that it is highly unfair that to get the best gear ingame, they have to actually team up with other people. In other games, you might find them complaining that they can't be every crafting profession at once, and will have to cooperate with other players to craft their gear. - Why - First of all, let me say that I have not the slightest clue why people insist on playing a MMORPG if they have no intention of working with other players. The very basis of MMORPGs is building a community of players who will have to work together in some way; be it by cooperating in a dungeon, or simply by providing gathering materials for each other. If a game developer didn't mean to make this happen, they would have made it a single player game; after all. What Mr. Solo fails to comprehend is that the game was designed in such a way, that if you wish to see all the content, you are going to have work together. Complaining that they will never be able to get a Skull of Gul'dan because they would have to go there with twenty-four other people and then have to work out who gets the item just goes to show that Mr. Solo fails to realise that other people actually enjoy the concept of having to come up with strategies together; or working together to hold back other players in an Siege. In conclusion, if you're a Mr. Solo casual complaining that there simply isn't enough solo friendly material in the game, you have quite obviously started playing the wrong game. World of Warcraft is already far more solo-friendly than some of the other MMORPGs out there, if it still isn't enough for you, you might want to reconsider your reasons to play a multiplayer game. Effortless Joe - What - 'I want a really nice weapon, but I can't be assed to do that instance' is one thing that an Effortless Joe casual will throw out as an excuse at every occasion. Quite easily the most annoying casual, the Effortless Joe expects everything to just land in his or her lap. You will find them complaining that it takes too long to reach the maximum level and that the producer should have simply gotten rid of the concept of levels. At other times, they will complain to no end that, even though they aren't spending hours upon hours trying to get the strategy for that raid boss right, they still should be entitled to the piece of loot it drops. Quite clearly the game should have been aimed at instant gratification at no cost. - Why - An Effortless Joe is the kind of player who will go through games with cheats to make things easier. In a game of CS or Unreal Tournament, they will be the player running around with aim hacks for an easy win. Having to put effort into their game-play is simply a frightening concept to them, and that is where their twisted mind needs to get a grip. There are people who enjoy having to take a challenge. If a boss dropped dead upon starting the encounter, or if every other player in a battleground was ten times weaker than themselves, they would get bored and leave. What Effortless Joe fails to remember is that not everybody is a cheap skating bum who expects to get paid for sitting on their fat arse. World of Warcraft is already extremely friendly when it comes to instant gratification. Compared to other MMORPGs, it takes little effort to learn the game and even less to get good gear. Players can craft gear equal to tier 4 by simply raiding the Auction House and complaining that the game is too difficult will make a fool out of yourself. Instances have been getting tuned down a lot to make things easier; Blizzard has even released Tier 6 equal gear in the form of Badge of Justice rewards, just so that players can get to higher end instances. The thing is, Effortless Joe doesn't want to get to the higher end instances. He wants the gear, not the ability to take on a harder instance. In conclusion, if you happen to be an Effortless Joe who keeps complaining that the game isn't giving you enough instant gratification, go back to playing Diablo 2 and cheat yourself a full set of imba gear, go out there and show the world that you can be cool without doing anything for it. Or is finding the appropriate hack to do so too much effort? The Casuals Have Been Shot And that's it. You have survived the onslaught of a bored Theik typing up the first thing that comes up in his mind, and you deserve a cookie for that. I know that this blog is not going to make the slightest dent in the sea of complaining casuals, but if even one casual reads this and realises that they have picked the wrong kind of game, I'll have made a difference. If, however, you are a casual who still feels that World of Warcraft should have been tailored more towards their lazy needs, I have only one thing to say to you; QQ more and go play Tetris |
