| One of the primary throne-bearers in my pantheon of idols in performance and philosophy, George Carlin passed away at age 71 on 23 June, 2008. George can easily be called a pioneer of raging intellectualism. He articulated incongruence in society for over four decades, and made it seem so easy that it inspired everyone who watched him to try to question tradition and general conservative silliness. In his final HBO special, George, who had just turned 71, trotted out onto the stage and, without hesitation and without any small talk or introduction, as was his tradition, he yelled, Fuck Lance Armstrong! He then proceeded to fuck Tiger Woods and Dr. Phil, wondering why it was that we were told who our heroes should be. The hero who least escaped his criticism was the man himself, God - George poked fun at his incompetence and recommended better performing alternatives, the Sun and Joe Pesci. Carlin commentated on the morphology, or, as he would have seen it, the muddying or degradation of language - old fuckers had suddenly become senior citizens, a blanket epithet that carried no dignity or humanity. It should be mentioned that George mostly focused on American politics, but there was always enough ridiculous shit going on there to serve the rest of the world's comedic needs - he seemed to have almost reached the breaking point when he noted confusedly, Now they're thinking about banning toy guns. AND THEY'RE GONNA KEEP THE FUCKIN' REAL ONES! - as his gaze wandered frantically in search of a national sanity long since departed. Well, it is George who has now departed, and he has carried with him a HUGE amount of the sanity upon which the world has depended. I don't know about you guys, but I have NO idea what the hell we're going to do with ourselves without George Carlin around to make fun of us all and keep us in check.
