This is solely for curiosity's sake and not really for entertainment value but I'm just hoping for a decent, self-evaluative response. Why, when arguing on the internet, would anyone ever say 'Learn to spell' or 'I'm better educated than you' in order to prove themselves correct? I mean, why do we make random insults anyway in an argument? I tend to tell the people that I'm arguing with that they shouldn't insult me (and vice versa) unless they have previously backed up the reason why they have insulted me (i.e. 2+2 is not 5, it's 4, that's common knowledge therefore you're stupid). To me, it seems like insulting only fills a void left behind by an inability to argue your point. Maybe not though. I've seen many of you reply with at least one of the aforementioned 'comebacks', so don't deny it and thanks for any response!

Hey man,well from my expirience in arguing with friends,i think that most ppl insult and say stuped things,because they are angry.When someone is angry,he doesent think what he will say and normally he would regret after that.People need to calm dawn or they will say things,they will regret on next day.I have seen some really ugly things,because of that.So thats my opinion

Insults are used for several purposes in arguments, but simply some of the reasons are to show that, you know so much more than the one you are discussing with. When you call somebody a retard over the net for an example, you are trying to show that you know so much more that you are not even taking into consideration of what the other has to say since it is so 'silly'. Another reason is to make him lose all his credit. You can see this for an example in court, where if there is an expert witness he will be attacked on personal levels, his education and so on to make him lose all his credit and therefor his arguments, statements and so on are worthless.
Then it makes you look more confident, that you know what you are talking about.

I mean sure if you are sitting down 1v1 and discussing being nice and polite is fine I suppose, but if you are debating openly or somewhere like a forum where you are trying to make people think that what you're saying is correct and that your way is right then you get help from that.

Of course some just lacks arguments, so instead of saying anything solid backed up with arguments then insults, they might only have insults. Usually you don't argue with those since, they are beyond words.

But some people miss the point completely when arguing or discussing. Take for an example british politicians. You see an interview, where the interviewer attacks the politician on personal levels, accusing his wife to be a whore, asking how he can handle being a politician, when he can't even handle his own son etc.
Most people would have gotten upset and left after a series of personal attacks, instead after the interview was done they shook hands thanked each other and went for tea.

The point is here, that in short, when arguing and discussing they know you try to bring each other down to prove your own point. It is nothing personal, and after the discussion everybody know it was just a discussion. No hard feelings. So do not get offended that easily!
