| We want it all and we want it now | by Grimbrock @ 16 Jul 2008, 12:41 PM |
| Thats what the whole World of Warcraft is about. Or as i think. Thats what World of Warcraft is heading to. But in my opinion, even if you have one of the best and motivated developer teams like Blizzard has, its a fight that can't be won. A hearty welcome to you all in my second and maybe last blog Today i want to talk about the four kinds of players that play (or had played) World of Warcraft and the main reason why the number of the first two kinds (the starters and members) will decrease in the next month and the number of the other two kinds (quitters) will increase apart from the obvious reasons like summer. First of all, the Four kinds of WoW players: 1. The Fanboy Blizzard is unfailable. Every tiny bit of programm code is a single masterpiece in the mind of the typical fanboy. You can argue for hours with him and he could give you an explanation why its 'as intendet' or 'impossible to change it' for every single mistake or failure Blizzard had programmed. Everyday he visits wow-europe.com, nihilum.eu, mmo-champion.com, chardev.org etc. and he can answer you any question. He will stick to WoW until the last server is shut down. Blizzard obviously needs that kind of player and they present imo 20% of the Community. 2. The casual addict We all know his view of the game and most of us see it in exatcly the same way. He has a lot of fun to try out new instances and explore new regions or complete new quests and he is always there for his friends they need a buddy for quick Kara run or what so ever. He plays World of Warcraft since a friend had shown it to him one or two years ago and is now member of his or another guild with new mates and a good social connection. No matter if its a hardcore guild or a casual raid guild. Even a casual guild without raiding has those people in it and everyone repects them and likes to play with them. (In the whole blog i speak of the nice and friendly players and leave the CS:S kiddies and arrogant a**holes out in order to keep it short :-)). In the last few months this player always thought about quitting or not. But his good friends and the last funny instance run always remind him about the good parts in this game and made him forget about crappy random runs or the growing feeling that theres not much more to do than farming or pvp. That kind of player presents imo 40 % of the Community. 3. The frustrated casual ex-addict He once was player type no. 2. In most cases he is the friend, that invites player type no. 2 a few years ago and brought him to the game. But he is frustrated now. He stands the whole evening in Shattrath and has no real challenge. He raidet nearly everything he can reach with his guild or team. He plays pvp once in a while but it also couldn't satisfy his need for new instances or quests. And even if there are new quests or instances he slowly realises, that it will alway stay the same. Get Gear to be ready for clearing a hard dungeon in order to get some gear there to be ready for clearing a harder dungeon in order to get some gear there to be ready for clearinga much harder dungeon in order to.... on and on again. Sure said, its always fun and entertaining to get new gear and try new stuff but... there is something missing. He feels like hes a little hamster in his wheel. Running and running endlesly without any destination. He will never see an endscreen with a big 'Congratulations, you've done it. You reached your goal.'. It will always be 'Hey nice. Good effort. Now try this.'. And this whole thing is the reason for him to quit. One day he log in and instantly realises: 'Okay. I've had it. Enough.'. That kind of player presents imo 30 % of the community. 4. The (this is a long one and doesn't fit this caption) dumb, arrogant, selfish, ignorant, imbacile, hated and in every case best to be ignored MILITANT QUITTER. Everyone knows these ones. The forums are full of these ignorant failures in life that spam every little forum post about changes or bugs with 'Oh i'm so glad i quitted that game hundrets of years ago. You guys are all so dump to pay so much money for a game that is so full of crap and from a company thats just interestet in money.'. He's like the smoking quitters which run to every person who smokes and tell them how stupid it is to smoke and how dangerous and bla bla bla. GET A LIFE. That kind of player presents 10 % of the community. So these are the kinds of players which we all see in our forums and blogs and InGame. So why should the quitters become the dominant kind of player? Let me explain: With the grwoing community of players you have bigger groups of every kind of player. There are the CS:S kiddies which pwn in pvp and are the greatest power rangers of the universe or the hardcore raids which for 30 days in the year stand on knives edge and the rest of the time farm old content or the family father who just loves to run an instance once in a while with his friends and just don't want to put so much effort in seeing all the content. All these groups have different needs. Balanced PvP, more PvE content, more hardcore bosses, more items for casuals, more awards and so on. And here comes the Problem. Blizzard tries to satisfy ALL of them. Which is impossible. The fight has reached to many battlefields. They tune the game in 10 different ways which all have an effect on the other ones. PvP tuning effects your PvE strategies and the same way the other way around. You just couldn't satisfy ten million people with different needs. I think Blizzards WoW is a big bubble growing bigger and bigger and one day... will explode. Of course, the won't drop from ten million to zero, but there will be a huge decrease in the next year or so. If you try to make 10 games in one, then you have a game with 10 aspects which are all good but not 'realy' good. You have 10 times 80 % but not one single time 100 %. I think you know what i mean. Some day the PvP Freaks will went to a more PvP based MMO with perfect balanced system and the PvE Freaks will move in great number to a game with perfect story and simple PvP System. For me. World of Warcraft will soon be 'a game i used to play'. I love PvE and Dungeons but just look at nihilum.eu, mmo-champion.com or any other site. PvP news all day long. The PvE side of WoW will get a push when WotLK comes out. But that is months in the future and until then... well... no idea what to do or what to see what has not been done a hundret times or has been seen for years now greetz Grimbrock |

I dont really wants to see the old instances again (Farmed out), or the old talent trees and the non resilience pvp. :<
