Chinese Game Operations Suspended

Online gaming has been suspended today in China for 3 days, until the 21st of May, 2008. The reason behind this suspension is the earthquake that took so many lives and injured so many on May 12th 2008.

"The9 (NCTY) says it will suspend the operations of World of Warcraft, Soul of The Ultimate Nation, Granado Espada, Joyful Journey West, and MU from May 19, 2008 to May 21, 2008, in response to the government's call for three days of mourning for the earthquake tragedy in Southeast China. The operations of the foregoing games will be re-established starting from the calendar day of May 22, 2008."

The earthquake that hit the province of Sichuan last Monday took over 34,000 lives and left 240,000+ injured.

3 days, I mean you do have to have like 5 mins of silence out of respect for those who died, but 3 days? Imean people have to move on with their no-lives aswell...

I don't get it, if people want to show their respect to the victims I don't think they should be forced by their government... 5 mins of silence ok, but 3 days of 'don't do anything that's not respectful' is too much imo.

Aww common,

I don't think the big issue here is that 3 days of mourning is or is not necessary. I think that what happened was absolutely horrible and should never happen again.

The issue at hand here is that it was ordained by the government that everyone should mourn. People should have a choice on what they should be allowed to do within reason. To have the government step in and force everyone to do someing like this is just wrong.

We may disagree with a lot of things (such as the guy who plays WoW 1 day after the earthquakes?), but that doesn't mean we have to dictate to others what should be done.

This just goes to show that China is in fact not making any strides to allow for more personal freedom.

To be honest, I don't really understand the meaning of this either.. Suspending online gaming, hell, then you'd also have to suspend playing Monopoly in the kitchen or turn off all television... I mean, it's really up to the individual how to adapt to the situation, and sure as hell it's very sad what has happened, but it doesn't mean you should be forced to do something (or to not do).

I'm not saying it's not a sad thing, just that maybe this is overreacting a bit, by cancelling some peoples hobbies..

EDIT: It's not like playing World of Warcraft means you're careless and don't give a shit, it's just a a hobbie.. Sure as hell noones just staring up into the air for 3 days straight anyway.

earthquakes do always hit the poor ones hardest

it is more sad 'cause there was as well as no evacuation before though the signs for a natural desaster were quite obvious.
Those who should mourn most are the executives who ignored those signs

I read all your comments, as a Chinese thanks a lot for showing your kind-hearts to the people suffered in the earthquake. I really appreciate it. Thank you guys.

About the human right, I agree with you there is a big problem about human right.I know it. Chinese people knows it. Trust me I hate this more than any of you guys, My mum was put in prison for 7 years only because she practice FA LUN GONG(which is a religion banned in China),And she is still in prison.

I know western countries have made a lot of pressure on Chinese government to fight for Chinese human rights like anti-Olympics. But not all Chinese understand your original intentions. Olympics is a big thing for Chinese people. We have been working for it for years. "anti-Olympics" hurts Chinese people a lot. Most of them do not understand western people is fighting for their human right but think this action is fighting against them :S

China is a old country. it has different culture,sometimes it is "wrong" to judge something from your point of view when you don't know their culture well enough. Like i have problems with Japanese culture. I read some article it says some Japanese fathers take bath together with their daughter even their daughter has got married. I really can not understand this. not from my culture point of view. I would not want my daughter see me naked :S. But I can say if it is wrong thing to do in Japanese, Because I do not understand their culture well enough.

But I see some hope from our government this time, It really doing everything it can to save as many life's as possible. Our top leader went to the middle of the earthquake area to help victim. And the high level after-earthquake is still happening. I see the picture of our prime minister from news. I see his eyes are full of tears I see he is really care about the people. I see the hope of our government from his eyes.

I see the government is get better I will try to believe in it and see how it goes.

Well that is how I see and understand China, the people, the government.

I hope this helps you to know better about my country.
